If that captures current usage accurately, it’s changed a lot over the last 40–50 years. In my experience (from the 1970s to the present) it’s been applied broadly to boys/men of any age. Less so animals except maybe horses. Calling a woman handsome meant “you look good for your age”, which, yikes.

Yeah, I do think it depends a lot on the context you grew up in! I was born in the mid 90s and my experience is that if a cis man is good looking, my peers have called him cute or hot or something, not handsome. Thank you for adding this context; Linguistics fascinate me ✨

Maybe it’s a community-specific usage? I have noticed words can take on radically different connotations or contexts in different circles.
