I had the same reaction when I learned about the disputed yet possible meaning behind "The good Lord willing, and the Creek don't rise." I used to think it was lower case and referred to a moving body of water, not a mass killing event of Native Americans who were just fighting back.

It looks like that’s not true. No record has been found of it being written by the person it’s attributed to. I found multiple sources confirming that the water version is correct. nativeheritageproject.com/2012/08/20/g...
