Hirschman's book is great! But as he points out, Smith is making highly reductionist moves to fit this behavior to his system. You see this also in the poor man's son story in Part IV of ToMS.

Never mind the poor man’s son, scroll two paragraphs up for irrefutable evidence Smith was oblivious to the plight of women and their notoriously pocketless dresses.
