He was actually pretty crisp. Not stanning for him! But with every Labour MP repeating the same talking points, it was kind of a relief.

They admit the trash part is skeevy, but say OTOH the house-flipping show will pay to renovate the house, so it won’t get torn down and replaced with a McMansion. The trees will live and Susan would’ve liked that. We remain unhappy about disrespect to our friend’s memory... 2/3

Updated version of the reality show on 85th St. drama: Another set of neighbors say the "reality show" in question is not "Hoarders," but a house-flipping show. All the trash they added to the house last week is to make a more dramatic before/after effect. 1/3

… and strewed garbage everywhere. Here's a picture from today. I get that reality shows make stuff up. What seems wrong is that this becomes a story about Susan, who led a dignified life. She watched our dogs, kept track of neighborhood cats, restocked the free pantries, knew everyone. (2/3)

Backyard bird drama: the little guy at left is running around on the ground but apparently can't fly. What look like anxious parents (right) flying back and forth. Sounds like there's a nest nearby, though I can't see it. Got the dogs in, but don't know if there's anything else I can do.

I can now confirm that my new book, “The Memory of ‘76” is a real thing. The book explores the conflicting ways Americans have remembered the Revolution over the last 250 years and its importance in our politics and culture. It is out on July 23rd and available for preorder now.

What do people make of the argument that Smith was a Stoic?

Hirschman's book is great! But as he points out, Smith is making highly reductionist moves to fit this behavior to his system. You see this also in the poor man's son story in Part IV of ToMS.

... also the "of their times" argument fails because monuments are *by their nature* temporally displaced, put up later, often much later after whatever is memorialized, to rework the past for the purposes of whoever has the power and wealth to put large objects in public places.

This is great! It also chimes with this piece, also in my feed thus morning. Monuments are interventions in public space, aiming to nail down one meaning.

Took care of a pair of adolescent cats once, and you could see them, in the evenings, walking around the house looking for mischief to get into. I could usually bribe them with catnip.

Getting scourged makes people even more eager to insist it's all in the past. There's also an odd libertarian streak in India, if my own in-laws' opposition to seat belts is any indication.
