Yes, you're right. It is does look varied. When I first saw the painting, I also thought it was Holbein, but after looking at his paintings again, I can see the difference.

Quick translation for those who do not read German: For the period of 16 June 2018 - 15 July 2018, we are looking for Dutch and Italian temp workers for all our Ikea stores, so our Swedish employees can watch the World Championship ⚽ on site or on tv.

With the Euro 2024 Championship ongoing, I'm reminded of Ikea's brilliant add back in 2018, when the Dutch and Italians were eliminated from participation in the World Championship. Years later it still makes me laugh.

Yes, it is very reminiscent of a compass, but I cannot fit the teeth/jaws in that interpretation. At least I've never seen that on a compass.

That was my first thought as well, but I've never seen those jaws on a compass? Maybe it's not even a screw and it just looks a lot like the head of one (with the screw drive visible)? I don't know what to make of it.

I'm no art historian (I'm sure others on here can speak to this better than I ever can), but from what I've understood objects like the broken glass, as well as the almanac, are reminders of "our swiftly passing days" ("vergankelijkheid" in Dutch).

Got to see Willem Claesz Heda's "Still Life with Oysters, a Silver Tazza, and Glassware" (1635) in real life for the first time, and I'm awestruck by his detailed and skilled depiction of polished silverware 🏆. #earlymodern #histsci 🗃️

Yes, I just found that image as well when looking for a Hans Tucher who died in 1618 (Hans III died in 1632 according to the text). I cannot make out the part that mentions how else he was called. It might help determine which Hans the epitaph is referring to.

Oh, it's just curiosity on my part (the diptych is not connected to my dissertation). Here's a close up of that corner, in case that's helpful. The middle (and possibly also the top) of that circle (whatever it is) is damaged.

Yes, the texts are often difficult to read. Water helps. It looks like it's indeed for Hans Tucher, Compastenmacher, sonst [?] genand.

If I ever find out anymore (I'm hoping to get in touch with some epitaph experts here), I'll let you know.

Do you know what the circle just outside the dial is (on the upper right corner)?

The Nuremberg city council had strict regulations about epitaphs and gravestones, which helps explain why it was cast on a flat surface. The fact that Danner was allowed to mount his on a slope is indicative of his status/reputation. Would've loved to see what a 3D bronze dial would've looked like.

I love this:
This epitaph of a sixteenth-century 'Buchdrucker' and 'Verleger', does not depict his tools or craft, but rather the cemetery where he is buried and its practice (still used today) of moving gravestones. #earlymodern #medievalsky #histsci #histtech 🗃️

@stephenaj.bsky.social, I've found you the grave of a "Compastenmacher." It's difficult to see the details in the bronze cast given the condition it's in. I've tried cleaning it w/ water, which helped a little. I can send you the pics if you'd like (I have more).

Seeing how I could only read "Soll", "sein," "sehet," "der/die/daz," "zu," it's a nice reminder of how much work I've still got left to do with my own 16thc. records 😭

Other epitaphs with the same tools seem to confirm that they indeed belong to a "Drahtzieher" (wiredrawer/-puller).
While looking for other tools, I also found the epitaph of a nailmaker (see last pic)!

Thank you to everyone who helped! 💕 #earlymodern #skystorians #medievalsky #histsci 🗃️

The blocks & punches remind me of a technique used in armor making called 'dishing' (or 'sinking') where you hammer a metal sheet into a hollow or around a ball stake to harden it & add shape & volume. The amor maker I worked with said they may also have known this technique in the middle ages.
