"A Trump Presidency might also facilitate a broader UK-EU rapprochement, particularly if Britain feels isolated and squeezed by the economic hit from a Trump trade war and the EU’s own response to it. Many in the EU are also likely to think that Britain should be kept as close as possible." #brexit

Thanks. I don't know him, but he seems toxic. Some of the other signatories I know; some I even regard as friends. But on this issue I profoundly disagree with them, and felt I had to say so.

Not convinced Biden can or shd be doing the world's most burdensome job aged 81, but there's a hugely unfair gulf between the intense scrutiny he gets over the role of his family & the light-touch approach to Trump's problematic mixing of official & family business: www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cg...

I think this sober take is correct. After initial relief we no longer have to live through daily Tory psychodrama, the focus will shift to all the problems - including the fact that Reform, with its simplistic populist ‘solutions’ to complex problems, got ~15% of the vote; & that turnout was v low.

Never has Franklin's comment on the government of the US - "A republic, if you can keep it" - seemed so apt. After 234 years of the US as a constitutional republic, SCOTUS has decided that monarchy was a great idea after all. Speaking as a Brit, this seems a retrograde step.

I certainly don't take that for granted. But that's something the UK & European allies need to do regardless of improvements in UK-EU relations - it's just that integrating the UK into EU defence industrial initiatives should enable the money to be spent more effectively.

Pleased to contribute to this pre-election guide to reshaping the EU-UK relationship. In the foreign & security policy area, a good start would be to take the political declaration agreed in 2019 alongside the Withdrawal Agreement, & implement it fully.

How difficult is it to understand that this nonsense? NATO bent over backwards to avoid conflict with Russia and to maintain dialogue after the Cold War. It is Putin who has chosen conflict, and who thinks he has the right to dictate his neighbours' foreign policy orientation.

NATO said in 2008 that Ukraine & Georgia would join the alliance. If it had acted on its statement then, Putin would not have invaded either of them - he respects strength, not weakness. NATO is now repeating its error. What will it take to learn the lesson?

Whoever runs the @politico.eu social media should be ashamed of this headline: Putin’s statement was not "proposals ... to resolve the war in Ukraine", but a demand that Ukraine should surrender territory RU can't capture in war, & give up its sovereign right to choose its allies.

Excellent examination by @christina-kessler.bsky.social of pros & cons of Spitzenkandidaten system - not achieving what European Parliament wanted, because European Council won’t yield control of choice of Commission President to EP, but still useful as a ‘Europeanising’ process for EP elections.

The UK & its EU partners have worked together pretty effectively to support Ukraine & sanction Russia since Feb 2022. But the situation is getting more challenging - because of both Russian battlefield progress & the prospect of Trump's return to power. More UK-EU cooperation will be essential.
