It seems very American* to me. The Puritan roots keep showing; everything has to be worthy. Only the feckless (& Papists) are unsuspicious of joy. Joy is Not Serious. *not a compliment, even though I am one. We're a _different_ kind of mess from England**. I'd rather be an American sort of mess
