I watched the Fifth Element last night, and I know this is an annoying thing to say, but it is nice to see an expansive sci fi world which only exists in one movie. No spin offs, no sequels, no prequels, just one story.

This is where we get the modern YA from too. Adults are more comfortable reading books for younger readers since they felt "substantial enough" now. This isn't much of a reflection on her writing or anything, but I think book culture could be much different without Harry Potter

It's a funny thing to consider because she did change one fundamental aspect of children's books, which was that they never were that long before (this is why it was rejected so many times. It was an adult length novel for kids.) Publishing could be very different today.

I'm reading H.G. Wells's When the Sleeper Wakes (guy falls asleep for 200 years and wakes up owning half the world) and I'm very surprised that the only prominent adaptations is a Woody Allen film and Futurama (kind of).
