Look at the 2005 Tory leadership election for your guide here. Howard signalled he'd step down in May/June, but the election wasn't until October. There'll be an internal review of the electoral rules first, for starters: they'll be looking for a younger Starmer-alike.

Yes. But they might tolerate an arrangement where there's a formal non-aggression pact and a division of seats - a joint ticket. It's often forgotten that such an arrangement exists between the Labour and Cooperative Parties. About 10% of MP sitting on the benches are in fact Cooperative MP.
