If it was about keeping the Red Wall Leavers on board he could just throw out a few platitudes. Saying categorically no rejoin, no CU, no SM, “in my lifetime” is too strong to row back.

It seems like bad politics at the very least. Polling shows there is no enthusiasm for Labour - everyone just wants the Tories gone and Starmer is the best vehicle. Post-election he *really* needs to build a coalition to keep going. Alienating allies will damage his project.

One of the amusing ones is Badenoch’s seat. Loads of postal votes haven’t gone out. If Labour challenge the result she won’t be able to stand for the Tory leadership.

It was just redeploying resources to winnable seats. I think it was a mistake - there’s a national duty to challenge the Far Right and stop it getting a foothold.
