They were a boy band to the extent The Monkees were a boy band: Both were created by an executive to fit into a fashion and both had actual musical ability. Neither were "True And Honest" bands like Nirvana which formed from webs of friendship and/or want ads.
In case it isn't clear, I'm not awed by the notion of authenticity in pop music, and that's what this was: Commercial ventures selling music and merchandise to a subculture. "Selling out" is a fake idea and being created "pre-sold-out" is no mark against a good act.
