There are also a number of good puffin watching spots on Heimaey, the only inhabited Westman Island. Head toward Stórhöfði, the south end of the island - there's a bird-watching blind there. If the winds are calm, you can try walking along the cliffs at the far south end. Lots of puffins.

Assuming you're up for a small diversion, you can take the ferry to the Westman Islands. The eruption there in 1973 buried about a third of the town. Eldheimar is there: a museum focused on the effects of the eruption. IMO, it's one of the best museums in Iceland.

The Hellisheiði geothermal power plant is worth a look. It's off to your left as you leave the capital area for Vík via the Ring Road. Next to it is an old ski lodge that was a set for Ben Stiller's "Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (it's where Walter gets his skateboard).
