I came here to talk about movies and chew bubblegum. And I’m all out of bubblegum. I watch *a lot* of movies but particularly Japanese cinema, and I’m slowly learning the language in hope of being able to seek out new discoveries.

Orangeade tastes of oranges. Irn Bru does not, but it is orange in colour.

Toho seem to be back working with foreign companies after a few years of not giving a crap, perhaps the terrible Yen means either they are desperate or the prices foreign companies are willing to pay look more attractive. Whatever the reason, if it gets me more movies I’m happy.

I often feel intense shame at my drag on GDP. It is simply impossible for me to feel any personal dignity knowing I have not contributed enough economic units. I lay awake at night wondering what I will tell my grandkids I did during the war on inflation.

Doesn’t quite fit your bill but Highlander, although the second film came out the year before it was a TV show the show was a different continuity that pretended the sequel movie didn’t exist and it then had multiple series and movies of its own.

They only got the most begrudging of theatrical runs from Disney, after people were furious they were getting dropped straight on D+. Box office is a weird judge of quality anyway but nobody should even consider applying it to these. Also if you’re not watching Luca in Italian 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼

I’m in my 40s and grew up in a shitty boring town. Spent most of the ‘00s travelling the country/other countries to hand out with online friends. Eventually moved to live near a bunch of them. Still here, still know them, still travel to see people I’ve known for 25 years online.

I really like this one (I love that size/format, they often have such great designs but they’re pretty rare) but a few weeks ago a bought a Godzilla one so my budget is done for a while.

I would bet men are also keener to push for promotion on an ego/status basis and quicker to up and move to somewhere else in pursuit of the promotion regardless of the impact on family life, which then plays into bias when they hit recruiting against anyone else that isn’t willing to do the same.

To be fair to George Lucas, I bet he watched the reaction to those movies by the fucking dregs of the internet and realised what an excellent decision he’d made not being their target anymore.

I’ve got everything since 2012 there, and it’s probably the primary way I find movies to hunt down. I’ve even started adding content via tmdb when I find things in books that aren’t on there. And still, I hate the popular reviews there. It does work better if you follow cool people though.

This makes sense, as arguably George Lucas’s entire career conforms to the DENNIS system.

They figured out that to convince most people you are human you just have to sound like a dumb human that always thinks he’s right despite all evidence to the contrary. It is no coincidence that tech bros cracked this.

Ultimately streaming economics doesn’t work, expecting £20 a month to provide everything that has ever been and a pile of new stuff too is madness. I’m pleased there are more stories than ever of people discovering their favourite ‘old’ (2010s) movie has disappeared and they regret ditching the DVD.

Streaming is certainly killing things. Services have figured out most people don’t care about quality, and shovel up any old version just to have a big catalogue, and for the most part it’s the money makers that are getting the restoration treatment. Boutiques definitely slow the death though.

As a neurodivergent brain, just about the only consistently good feedback I’ve ever had across jobs is that I can pull together information in a way other people can’t. An LLM trained to ignore the details and parrot back the obvious headline is about the most useless thing I can imagine.

I read an interview with John Waters once where he said “You have to have good taste to understand bad taste”, and it was a total lightbulb moment for me. People that can’t even understand the text will never get the subtext, people that can’t understand the norm can’t understand the subversion.

Ok Apple, your AI is super respectful of privacy and it’s never going to do anything with my data without my permission. Tell me then, what did you train your language models on? (I can believe they didn’t steal data to train the image models because they look like shit.)
