Naomi Klein is quoted (via The Guardian) saying the biggest change in the world since 1999 is "neoliberalism has created so much precarity that the commodification of the self is now seen as the only route to any kind of economic security."
Most musicians have no idea how much time is needed to promote their work. Besides creating the music (and this applies to all art) it takes hours to pitch to playlists, post links in all the channels, manage the numerous services where your work can be found. And don't let's start on Spotify.

I see the results of the new ways. I do not have appreciation for these ideas. All I ever wanted was a regular life fixing things. A small simple home 🏡 with a fireplace and some privacy. That seems like it would be a great way to live. Not depending on your popularity. Most people aren’t popular
I reposted this article recently too, because this whole "self-brand" thing has been hounding me since I finished graphic design school about 16 years ago, and it's followed me as I tried streaming, and am now starting my business. I hate it :(
There was a science fiction book where whether you lived or not depended on how many people wanted to sleep with your simulacrum. I wish I cd remember the author (I think book was good tho depressing); all I can recall is they were obsessed a bit with Peter Gabriel. Seems like the endpoint of this.
