Red Markets with economic horror. Eclipse phase does sci-fi horror. Red Markets does grinding personal horror punctuated with action. Eclipse Phase does a lot of different things from body horror to psychological and existential.

Sure, Gygax wrote a huge list of inspiration books at one point. But the game didn’t go down those paths. The rules never got beyond small skirmish and never tried to enable any other style.

I don’t disagree, but, I feel like dnd is very bland. Pathfinder too. There’s a world, and the tech is kind of slapshot, but it’s expressly unexplored. There’s dragons and stuff and it’s kind of an egregore of whatever people kind of think about but lacking any touches that bring useful uniqueness.
