We may be able to estimate truthfulness or fairness of that kind of argument by the sheer size of the paths that possibly lead to the inference being proposed. A series of more and more tenuous semantic slippages can only be interpreted as fairly poor craftmanship.

I guess I’d add that one of the problems of a deeply partisan and lopsided court of final jurisdiction is there’s no need to craft arguments that might have general appeal, as there would be in a debate or before a jury. The sophistry can be fully open.
