I worked there too, but with Jackson. I haven't kept in touch, though.

With whom? The only voters who matter are suburban white people and never-Trumpers in a handful of states. Are you sure they would support Harris as much as/more than Biden? Sexism and racism are not solely right wing flaws.

Republicans control the house. Even if Harris became president, they won't confirm a vp. The decision is 100% Biden's to make.

But I don't think people can agree on "what they saw" at the debate. Everyone knows it was an awful performance. But was it fatal to the campaign? I mean, be alarmed, but don't pretend the next steps are SO OBVIOUS. It will unfold over the next month. Stakes are high, though, and people are scared.

Same here. Had barely finished my coffee before I got an absurd text from our idiot roofer. Not up for dealing with this already today.

The right wing has very effectively co-opted military symbols to perform their twisted version of patriotism.

This is what I've heard from people in a position to know. I have no first-hand experience. My uncle fought in Vietnam and I was reflexively anti-military. But things are rarely as simple as we'd like to think. I guess it comforts people to write groups off as evil, but it's actually not productive.

No, it's not. Call them killers. Murder requires a particular mental state/motivation/agency.

Because college isn't free and the military can open doors for intelligent young people? The trope about the military wanting all uneducated/poor kids is outdated. In my understanding, the skills to even be a grunt have elevated significantly w/technological advances.

Nobody's job makes them automatically a shitty person. We need feminist and anti-racist people to be inside sexist and racist institutions. How else will they be changed?

Along those lines, I became a prosecutor to fight for victims of DV, child sex abuse, rape, etc. But to the average (usually white male) leftist it's just ACAB and "you align w/racism" (as if any WM *hasn't* benefited from systemic racism and sexism, FFS).

I learned about this in elementary school in suburban Philly in the late 70s/early 80s. Weirdly, the kindest people at that time were the most devout Christians. The Xmas & Easter crowd were the overt bigots.

This is interesting - can you expand? My initial sense is that everyone is supposed to suffer in various ways to be validated/accepted. But I haven't really thought about this before.

Why do you need a "sounding board" when you can just read original sources you find from existing search engines? Why trust an auto-complete to summarize research for you that you later have to review for accuracy? Just do the f-ing work in the first place. That's what lawyers do, BTW.

Yeah, the problem is Biden is uncomfortable with that position and is unable to defend abortion as an issue of women's autonomy. He kept saying doctors should be in charge, FFS. He still wants the party line to be safe, legal, and rare. Fuck that. Women control their bodies. End of position.

The human brain is still largely a mystery to science. We can use FMRI to see what cells light up during each function but we don't KNOW HOW brains accomplish thought, emotion, reasoning, etc. LLMs merely simulate what we can observe. Nobody understands it enough to build a machine to replicate it.

Tools of statutory construction are a LAST resort only if the plain meaning of the statute/regulation cannot be ascertained. And the agency is in the best position to explain what it's own rule means. Such BS.

If he was my Dad, then yes. But *all of this* was a known risk to every Dem operative and they still believed the path back to the presidency went thru Biden. We don't have all the info. But we do know that one night in June rarely or never determines the outcome.

Losing one evening is not the same is losing an election. What does your freakout accomplish? Time will tell. More things will happen. We are not voting tomorrow.

And their debate strategy was terrible. He sounded unnatural and was forcing policy minutiae into every answer like a student writing an exam in a panic, scribbling everything they can remember about each topic in the blue book. He needed to keep it simple and hammer a few critical things. Alas.

Sounds like it's more about you saying "I told you so" than realistically assessing damage 4 months before the election. Freaking out about a bad debate is pointless. It's not like the opponent looked good - he rambled conspiracy theories and outright lied every time he spoke!

That is true for most Democrats and sane people. At this time, under these circumstances, the Democrats must keep the presidency. I don't care if Biden is enfeebled. Trump is the alternative and that's fatal to democracy.

At the end of the day, I don't need to be excited about the top of the ticket to be excited about this election. The presidential election is a root canal. Unfun but probably important not to avoid. DOWN BALLOT IS WHERE IT'S AT! Let's codify abortion! Let's kick these bitches off school boards!

If you have to write pseudo-code to get it to answer accurately, what is the innovation here? It's being sold as "conversational" intelligence not "hey did you know you can program a computer to do a task?"

This is why I lie to myself on my calendar. Because I really am trying to be on time and I will obey what the calendar says. Brains are sometimes dumb/irrational and you can often trick them.

This is incoherent as an argument for why lawyers should use LLMs. You don't seem to understand how legal disputes arise, what parties are required to provide to the court and each other, or what legal or factual research is meant to accomplish. I don't think you're qualified to make this argument.

But they're objectively not useful. The nature of legal research is determining WITH PRECISION the significance of the information as it relates to a SPECIFIC legal standard. Getting the general idea does not "save time" because the general idea or an approximation is useless in this context.

The thing about LLMs and the practice of law is: They Don't Know What Words Mean. Law is 100% about facts IN CONTEXT applied to RELEVANT law. LLMs can't do context or meaning at all. More importantly, we have for 30 years had computer assisted legal research. We don't need these weak toys.

But that's not "Gen AI" - it's a closed system with correct answers that calculates taxes. And we already have that. It just should be nationalized and pre-loaded with all the info the federal and state governments already have. Like most countries do.
