I've also noticed this tendency in some of my own family, always in the most conservative Christians. Speaking personally, a big part of coming out of my libertarian phase was learning to recognize that my own emotional reaction to an idea was completely separate from whether it was any good.

Exhibit A is Jordan Peterson. I've noticed in his rhetoric that he seems very impressed by his own emotional reaction to his ideas, which seems to lead him to believe that they are somehow extrinsic to his own brain.

I'm fairly convinced that the concept of God remains popular because so many people (mostly men) aren't properly taught how to deal with Big Emotions and therefore need an external explanation for those emotions.

Street Fighter (1994) and The Count Of Monte Cristo (2002). The first is terrible and the second a complete bastardization of one of my favorite novels but they're both so much goddamned fun

Any Joe Abercrombie. Dude has a rep as a Darky Dark Dark Fantasy author but he reads to me like if you crossed Pratchett with Mark Twain in his more cynical later years. I have laughed aloud reading him multiple times. (I recommend Best Served Cold as a first read)

Demon City Shinjuku (1987). Caught it on cable during the afternoon when I was like ten, thought it was some sort of Highlander: the Animated Series spinoff because I didn't know that anime was yet, was deeply disturbed by the opening fight scene where the hero loses all his limbs
