Lionfish gets a bad reputation because they are invasive in the Caribbean, but they are definitely beautiful fish, and always a pleasure to see them in their native habitat (as seen here in the Maldives)! #ichthyology

I love photographing fish doing odd behaviors like yawning. This beautiful Nemanthias dispar did it once, and I was quick enough on the trigger to capture this nice image! They probably do it to dislodge pieces of food from the gill rakers. #ichthyology

The Five-striped Hogfish (Bodianus paraleucosticticus) is common in #mesophotic ecosystems of the Western Pacific. In the Coral Sea, we found it between 80 and 120m depth, always solitary in areas of high habitat complexity. Oh and I almost forgot, it's a beauty!

Groupers of the genus Plectropomus are known for mimicking toxic Canthigaster. The most impressive one of those to me is the Saddled Grouper (P. laevis), which mimics the Blacksaddled Toby (C. valentini). They are both quite common in the Great Barrier Reef. #ichthyology

The Blue Assessor (Assessor macneilli) is another beauty I photographer some years ago in the Great Barrier Reef and am looking forward to seeing again. It's found in other areas of the southwestern Pacific, but I only saw it in the GBR, where it was quite common. #ichthyology

Time to set the stage for my next adventure, which will happen in 10 days! I have been to this place before, but never dove deep there, and here is your first clue. This beautiful wrasse is common where I am going, any guesses?

Back to the fishes! Another interesting dive in the Maldives was a very shallow reef with many sharks where I took my first picture of a Tawny Nurse Shark (Nebrius ferrugineus). Bonus, I've never seen this many remoras following a shark before, what a sight!

Here is something different. A couple of weeks ago I went to the Maldives to dive shallow and did something I haven't done in awhile, a night dive! One of the highlights was an encounter with these beautiful Bigfin Reef Squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) they were quite common!

One of the most amazing things about the Galapagos is how different the eastern (warm) side is from the western (cold upwelling) side of the archipelago. Tropical species like this Blue-and-Gold Snapper (Lutjanus viridis) are mostly found in the eastern side. #ichthyology

Common names, right? I thought the same and actually looked up the “official” common name to see if there was a better one. Couldn’t find a good alternative.

The Bumphead Parrotfish (Scarus perrico) is widely distributed in the tropical eastern Pacific, but I only saw it for the first time in the Galapagos a few weeks ago. It gets really big (up to about 80cm long), and this one was as big as it gets!

Here is another super cool fish that I saw for the first time in the Galapagos, the Pacific Beakfish (Oplegnathus insignis). It's a cold water species also found in Peru and Chile. They are called "beakfishes" because their teeth are fused forming a beak (like parrotfishes).

Speaking of fish that are big in the eastern Pacific, the Giant Hawkfish (Cirrhitus rivulatus) is the biggest hawkfish in the world, the size of a small grouper! This one was about 50cm (20in) long, while most other species of hawkfish don't get larger than 15-20cm. A beast!

The Fin-spot Triplefin (Lepidonectes corallicola) is a beautiful Galapagos endemic. It's in the family Trypterygiidae (three dorsal fins) and fish in this family are usually very small, but this species from the Galapagos grows a lot! This adult female was about 10cm (4in) long!

The Rainbow Scorpionfish (Scorpaenodes xyris) is small and hard to find (cryptic), but once you know where to find them, you will see they are quite common. It's widely distributed in the tropical eastern Pacific, found both along the coast and oceanic islands. #ichthyology

Staying on the small side but now moving into blennies, meet the Dendritic Blenny (Gobioclinus dendriticus). It's found in the Galapagos and Malpelo, and nuptial males have an distinctive white coloration. I spent the whole trip looking for one and found it on the last day!

From big and flashy, to small and nasty, meet the Galapagos endemic Blue Banded Goby (Lythrypnus gilberti). Don't let its good looks fool you, it's very small and hard to photograph, hiding between rocks and hanging upside down in caves, a true #NastyGoby!

Still on groupers, the Sailfin Grouper (Mycteroperca olfax) is another interesting one. It's found in several oceanic islands in the tropical eastern Pacific, and in upwelling areas of the Galapagos about 5% of them were yellow like this!

In the Atlantic, Coney (Cephalopholis fulva) has a yellow color morph, but the closely related Creolefish (Cephalopholis furcifer) doesn't. In the tropical eastern Pacific, the Pacific Creolefish (C. colonus) does! Very interesting!

I saw this fish for the first time in the Galapagos, and it's an odd one! The Coquito Sergeant (Nexilosus latifrons) is the only species in its genus, we call this a monotypic genus. It's found in rocky reefs of cold upwelling areas of the Galapagos, Peru and Chile. #ichthyology

King Angelfish (Holacanthus passer) were super common in the Galapagos, so I spent quite a bit of time looking for and photographing babies and teenagers. And I did find some stunners! Aren't they amazing? #ichthyology

Something different today. There are few places on earth where evolution is as obvious as it is in the Galapagos, and one of the sights that stunned me the most was seeing Marine Iguanas feed underwater. A clear example of how the Galapagos inspired Darwin. #explore

Prognathodes carlhubbsi is a beauty. Like other members of its genus, it's a relatively deeper water fish, preferring #mesophotic (50+m) depths, but it can be seen in very shallow waters in upwelling areas of the Galapagos. I photographed this one at 12m depth off Isabela.

Couldn't come to the Galapagos and not photograph some of the birds that are part of the radiation that inspired Darwin! This one is the small ground finch (Geospiza fuliginosa). Sadly, I won't have internet on the boat, so you will have to wait a little longer for fish photos!

Even though the Blue-Footed Booby (Sula nebouxii) is found in other regions of the tropical eastern Pacific, it's another symbol of the Galapagos. The common name "booby" comes from the Spanish "bobo" meaning silly, haha!

Because of its isolation, many species are only found in the Red Sea (endemics). The same process causes some populations to be different, and the population of Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) is more brightly colored in the Red Sea than anywhere else I have seen it!

I'm back from the really good Indo-Pacific Fish Conference, and will now restart everyone's timeline cleanse with beautiful fish. Starting with one of my all-time favorites, a baby Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator). The species is widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific.
