Ah that’s right, the poles flip! 🙃 Yeah I think this is where my brain was going with this …. There is like colonialism that is built into the sky coordinates that are exported out into space. My thoughts are not well thought out though … but something along these lines….

Also using a magnetic coordinate system not only risks a flip (which happens pretty infrequently) but means you have to deal with drift, which is happening *constantly* and is a major problem for precision navigation based on magnetic systems already! The Dept of Terrestrial Magnetism at Carnegie…

There was a time when celestial coordinates sometimes used north polar distance (always positive) rather than +/- declination. (And other choices for prime meridian on Earth were Obs de Paris, Obs Real de la Armada...) [1]
