I really wish I could switch of my “oh, look at that <animal>” part of my brain … it causes me great distress to see animals which are homeless and struggling for food. These two arrived next door and an older gent came out and fed them. A third, older cat appeared but had to wait for them.

I’m not judgy of people smoking - I know how hard it is to quit …. I smoked for 20 years … but it’s not hard to have a bit of consideration for people who are having a meal, who might have lung problems, children breathing in dangerous second hand smoke, etc. Don’t be a jerk with your smoking!

You’d think the national food for Italy would have been pasta or something …. but nope …. It’s cigarettes! So many people smoke here, and it is annoying me that when you are eating in an open air area (like at breakfast or outdoor dining) people are so selfish and just light up. 🤬🤬🤬

Been a very active 🚶♂️ day today, with over triple the usual step count. That’s due to that fun 2-hour hike and run I did around lunch, climbing to the top of a mountain here that is roughly twice the height of the Eiffel Tower. (it was also a double gelato day but I guess that was deserved!)

Ah that’s right, the poles flip! 🙃 Yeah I think this is where my brain was going with this …. There is like colonialism that is built into the sky coordinates that are exported out into space. My thoughts are not well thought out though … but something along these lines….

I keep thinking about the world’s oldest living culture, Indigenous Australians who have been around for ~65K years and we know did detailed Astro … from their perspective, the rotation reference point would have been the other way … how do we do Solar System planets though? Magnetically?

I’ve got some thoughts on this! As in why is North, North …. and the arbitrary reference point for which to measure rotation from. It sets the standard for the sky coordinate system which we then export out into space (“northern sky vs southern sky”). A product of northerism Astro I guess …

(I can’t see tweets or posts in that link 😢) But but but …. Isnt the North Pole actually under Antarctica? And the South Pole actually under Canada? Hence why compass needle points North … because opposites attract. (and so technically, Australia is not “down under” we are “above atop!”)

It was kinda eerie as I got to the top, as I was by myself for about 30 mins and there was no other human nearby. I (stupidly) freaked myself out thinking that there were wild animals or a sociopath murderer waiting for me. But then, I saw my friends. The antennas. And all was good in the world.

Made it up the long zig zag path to the top of the mountain and ran back down. Took about 2 hours total time (stopped for lots of vids and pics as well) Ended up sweaty AF, but happy I burned a heap of those Italian calories off with some exercise! 18K steps! 🥵 Pointing at that castle from above!

Update: we’ve been in a very minor car accident. The cab driver hit another car while changing lanes lol There was always a non-zero chance of this, given lack of traffic coherence, rules and people using their horn like sonar. Def. no swapping of insurance details post event, just carrying on 🤣

Palermo is a wonderful mix of cultures, influenced from northern EU, African and Spanish regions. It it also has developed its own South Italian culture. It’s a mesh of everything bohemian, artistic, and culturally very diverse. But the food ….. oh my … the food …. Sooooooo good! 🤤🤤🤤

Science friends … this requires some extra effort to get going, but you could try some of these on Bsky: - host an AMA - share a paper of a colleague and have a convo with them publicly - repost minority authors on days of significance (or 365d/p/y!) - the ol’ Follow Friday thing - use hashtags & 🧪
