Mods are out at the need prom, the problem is elite media went from wanting to break stories and do deeply reported pieces, to wanting to be policy analysts, which they are bad at, and be the story, which is bad for everyone.

There is a lot to dislike about David Foster Wallace but he got this dynamic extremely right and he had never even heard of netflix, much less youtube

Yes. It’s also a business model thing. 20 years ago the NYT had 100k national subscribers. Today it’s racing for scale and 10M subscribers, mostly national/online. Deep reporting is expensive and doesn’t drive attention and engagement. We have to figure out biz models that support real journalism
