Biden leaned into climate & environmental justice, & delivered in ways that would’ve been unimaginable a decade ago. It’s a huge part of the Admin priorities & accomplishments- b/c it’s important! We always need to push for more, forever. But if the climate coalition shrugs “meh”, we aren’t serious.

The US will set a 2035 emissions target under the Paris Agreement next year. That will create additional investment, policy incentives, and urgency to get to zero emissions faster. Kids & vulnerable folks will breathe healthier air & not get sick because of air pollution. All of that is at risk.

Gotta be honest here, I had a negative reaction to the term “mobesity”. Seems like linguistically tying heavy cars negatively toward a group of people is bad and gross.

And if he didn’t cite our piece in Nature saying the saying thing I’m gonna be mobeast mode

Political journalism in big media has always skewed white, male, and affluent. DC journalism is difficult to break into because POC are often "not seen" as suitable and the few who do break in many leave either because they dislike how the sausage is made, or get pushed out for "culture" fit reasons

it feels like the whiteness of big political media spaces right now is having a big effect on how people are thinking about the debate. eg I have seen relatively little discussion of trump's "black jobs" comment, which immediately exploded on black twitter

So I’m not going to sit and doom post and consent in advance that we’re going to throw everything away. We absolutely are not going to do that. We can be clear-eyed about the challenges ahead but confident that what we’re doing is good policy that helps people, which can be good politics if we try.

And BY THE WAY, the next Administration will need to set emissions reductions commitments under the Paris Agreement for 2035. Biden already has a 50-52% reduction target by 2030 & a net-zero by 2050 target. But the 2035 target sets the trajectory. Pull out of Paris & that goes away & dooms net-zero.

[eyeroll from you, I know] I was the official representing the WH at the US delegation table when the State Department leads presented the US progress in reducing GHGs to the rest of the countries at COP28. Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act & Bipartisan Infrastructure Law gave us climate credibility.

Under the current Biden climate policies, if we work hard on implementing them, we can get to an 80% clean electricity system by the end of the decade. If those policies go away, there is zero chance we will get there. Let’s work hard to get to 80% and also add more climate policy to get to 100%.

I was originally slated to be a close up patron in a store, but I ended up as a foreman outside the studio. So while they are recording I’m outside the windows. Can see me if you pause but I’m in the background a bunch. Was a really cool experience.

I got extremely lucky once to be one of four background actors for a couple days of filming with the amazing Oscar-nominated cast of the film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Watching those professionals work at the height of their craft was out of this world.

Mods are out at the need prom, the problem is elite media went from wanting to break stories and do deeply reported pieces, to wanting to be policy analysts, which they are bad at, and be the story, which is bad for everyone.
