Imagine when TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES was first proposed 'Well, see, we'll have these anthropomorphic turtles who live in the sewer and practice martial arts under a rat named uh, Splinter. The turtles will be named after Renaissance artists and uh, of course they'll love pizza...

It makes a little more sense when you realise a lot of the original pitch is spoofing on Marvel's Daredevil. Admittedly "a little more" is not "perfect" by any metric, but there *is* a method behind the madness.
