Indie author and friendly monster. I make serial entertainment and games for people (and monsters) of all ages. Bit of a loudmouthed socialist. He/him.

one thing i think a lot of private healthcare enthusiasts don't realise is that it's only providing a better service than the NHS because the NHS is a free alternative. once everyone has to pay for insurance, it'll do the same "slash quality to maximise profits" dance that every industry does

I was interested what Starmer thinks about electoral reform, given how this election went, and found an article from 2020 where he was quoted as being in favour of it. I also found an article from 2023 where he was quoted as being against it. Imagine my complete lack of surprise.

Starmer got less votes today than Corbyn did in the "disaster" of 2019, which Labour have given up absolutely every principle to avoid repeating. This wasn't a Labour win, it was a Conservative loss. Remember that for next time.

It's tragic just how many sites are now overwhelmed with useless AI trash. My former go-to place for royalty-free stock images is now utterly unusable because it's been flooded with the stuff. I don't even do that much graphics work, I can't imagine how much worse it is for visual artists.

Going to link a very good tool that's been a great help to me: iorate.github.io/ublacklist/d...
It's a browser plugin that allows you to blacklist sites from showing up in searches. It's like an adblock but specifically for search results.

I'd be happy to regale you with tales from Project Blue Ribbon Hog, perhaps over discord or something since I'm not sure how bluesky DMs work (if they do), but you'd best be warned that it's honestly more sad than funny.

It's the mythologising of history, the Disneyfication of real people and events. America can never be on the wrong side of history, it can only be failed through individual bad actors undermining its perfect, incorruptible values. Like a PragerU video.

Back in the late 2000s I was visiting an American friend and I showed her one of my favourite trashy British sci-fi shows. She was amazed at the way the show not only had a normal-looking woman in her late 30s, but she was even being depicted as the sexy love interest for the male lead!

Are you deliberately reminding me of the paleofantasy series I should be writing? Because I agree, I should be writing it right now.

Random artist appreciation post: Tom Björklund, "paleopainter."

He has an account at @tombjorklundart.bsky.social, but he's never posted, so I guess I'll do a bit for him.

His art of our ancestors and near-ancestors is warm, beautiful, and humanizing in a way I find very rare.

Sure would be nice if I could sit down and write happy fun fantasy books like I want to, without the ever-present itch in the back of my mind brought on by the knowledge that my government wants me to die and has never stopped wanting me to die.

I could tell it to the families of all the politicians who goaded January 6th to happen and then faced consequences for those actions. How long do you think that would take?

Oh, no, there's a very real hope of change. I just can't explain what that change would be or look like, because it kind of involves certain methods that the ruling class frowns upon. Also I would have a thousand centrist liberals screaming at me that violence is only good when the state does it.

My argument isn't "it's all the same", my argument is "the majority of politicians of your country (and mine) belong to a wealthy elite so detached from you and I that they cannot feel empathy for us."

It's the system *you* have, yes, but I would like to underscore the fact that I am in a different country and I do not have the luxury of participating in an electoral system (that still manages to ruin my life and the lives of everyone else on this planet).

The last politician (in my own country) who I saw campaign out of a genuine wish to do better for the people? Sabotaged by his own party, smeared in the media, and replaced by an empty suit. The system, neither mine nor yours, simply does not permit honest politicians to exist.

I saw, from way over here, the Dems making a lot of bluster about "kids in cages" and "the border wall" and now I am watching, still from a distance, the kids staying in cages and the border wall being built. If the Dems hate Trump, why enact his policies when he's not in charge?

You only have two choices, me or the other guy. It's a two-party system. If you try to vote for a third party candidate, your mentions are flooded with angry liberals telling you that you're throwing your vote away and you need to vote blue no matter who.

Again, it's not my democracy (and buddy, I don't even live in a democracy to begin with) but I do think it's valid for Americans to be concerned about this stuff. I just also think that you can't mythologize this into a struggle between good and evil when both sides work together all the time.

If I'm a politician and I can tell the voters "the other guy has put our democracy in peril, I'm the only alternative you can vote for" then where's my motivation to un-imperil democracy? What are they going to do next election when I present them with the exact same choice?

I don't live in the US (not that we don't have equally unpleasant problems over here) but it seems to me that the Dems don't actually disagree with GOP policies all that much, and the whole "vote for us or we lose democracy" thing is just a scare tactic.

It's not much of a democracy when you can only pick two options, either "we are gleefully embracing fascism" or "we are politely compromising with fascism".

We get this all the time in UK politics. Someone in the government lies openly, then the next time they're on TV they get asked the softball question of "do you stand by your statement" and they never actually give a yes/no answer. Usually they just take the opportunity to tell another, bigger lie.

The average Tory voter hears the concept, that honest taxpayers are expected to provide literal handouts (at their own expense) to jobless scroungers in some kind of domestic terrorist ritual imported from foreign climes, and becomes so incandescent with outrage that they have trouble breathing.

Over the years, cultural conquest being what it is, the UK has become a little more Halloweeny on Halloween. Some areas even do trick-or-treating, but it hasn't reached the same levels depicted in American media. Many households just don't answer the door, or put up signs saying they opt out.

And when they asked you how you enjoyed Arbor Day, did you do much tree-or-treating, watch any seriously leafy movies, dress up as your favourite tree, etc. — you'd just have to laugh politely and say "we don't really do anything like that over here." And they'd find it impossible to understand.

I guess a good analogy would be if you were made intimately aware that another country celebrated Arbor Day with the same gusto and financial recklessness usually reserved for Christmas. Made it a month-long thing with parties, decorations, events, constantly referenced it in movies and TV shows.

The American obsession with it always seemed weirdly alien, kind of surreal. We knew you guys did Christmas much the same as us, and you had your own holidays that we didn't, but the Halloween thing was... sort of like watching your weird cousin hyperfixate on one of your own casual interests.

When I was growing up it was basically below Easter in terms of effort put in. Maybe you'd make some jack-o'-lanterns in school or at home, you might have a handful of thematic programming on the TV (one scary movie per channel, maybe two if it was on a weekend). Trick-or-treat just wasn't done.

In the early days of the holiday, a lot of the effigies burned were not of Fawkes, but the Pope — the Gunpowder Plot was considered a heinous Catholic undertaking, after all. It became more about Fawkes as things cooled off, politically, and it was less acceptable to burn the Pope in effigy.
