Thinking about all the Joann Fabrics employees who were deeply underpaid and yet would answer a million questions from people about how to make and fix things.

the questions we'd be asked! My favorite was the lady who wanted to make a dress, but didn't seem to actually know anything about how to do so.

Joann was my first job and the only one I have no negative associations with. Great coworkers, good vibes, excellent deli sandwiches from the place on the corner. I hate what the investors did to it.

and blaming "decreasing demand"--each time I go into a small local mall, I see many empty stores and three packed with people--a kid's toy store, a bookstore and a fabric store

I always felt so bad for them because they really cared— the people in charge just made it impossible for them!

Always took forever to check out, though. I never did understand why. Doesn’t seem likely to get better under private equity

When I was first learning how to make my own clothes, JoAnn Fabrics employees were so kind and helpful to me. I think especially of the older employees, some walked a little slowly, but when they got scissors and bolt of cloth in hand, their hands were like lightning.

Talk about institutional memory—generations of sewers. Also, fabric is not something one wants to buy sight-unseen and unfelt.

I sent a screenshot of the quoted post to my wife, and she spent $156 in panic buying 56 skeins of yarn.

Truly Sad. Where else do you go for acres of bad fabric, glue guns and scrapbooking stickers? Joann Fabrics is like McDonalds -- it was only viable because there were so many of them.
