I participated in a group meditation this weekend for the first time in my life. Very unmeditative. The instructor meant to be spiritual and had good intentions, but I don’t understand why I need an artificial drums and her badly weaved prayers, when I have birds and wind fiddling the trees.

Indeed. Today identities and the need to identify as a part of a religion is also political. But in the past in many cases, people just practiced rituals without identifying them or naming them. As long as it did not disturb the ‘social order’, regulated by rulers on behalf of gods.
