I helped shoot/edit a documentary on a community of homeless people who lived under the 93 bridge during Boston’s Big Dig. One of them was the director’s uncle. Another was a manager at a DTX Dunkies who hung out there in the summer to party and not have to commute home. All of them had locale ties

That’s not correct. Analog devices have different copyright law. The Betamax Case established “recording and time-shifted viewing of copyrighted broadcasts for your own, personal, non-commercial use is not copyright infringement, but instead qualifies as fair use”
