That would be my approach. "I can do the job now. I do it every day, and I think the results should speak for themselves. But the American people are concerned about whether that will still be the case in two, three, four years, and I've come to accept that those concerns are valid."

I think that’s the only approach he can take if he is to remain in office. Any other reason to step aside puts into question his current ability to do the job, and if he has doubts about that then he should resign
