I feel you there. Trying to fight decades of negative experiences with a couple years (at most) of useful tools is such a task. But if we keep chipping away, day by day, we'll be able to get through it.

Fiction is alphabetical by author, and alphabetical by title unless there's a series. Then the order of the series. Goal is to have my non-fiction in some order, depending on if I can find an easy (app) way to catalogue via Dewey or LoC. Kids books, roughly age and binding.

I feel that so much. Except I think all my executives bailed long ago, and all that's left is an overworked and underpaid secretary collapsed in the corner crying. But nothing like impending deadlines to get you moving, right?
