Isnā€™t it interpreted as either Sevier or Laramide thickening, depending on where you are? So northern NV would be Sevier, but southern AZ would be Laramide? Sevier thrusts are exhumed in NW NV (see Art Snokeā€™s Ruby MMC stuff), and Jay Chapmanā€™s NA Anatectic Belt work focuses on Laramide processesā€¦

When your alma mater dug their structural geology hole, you definitely get to giggle when they canā€™t find their way out of it, right? (lines vs planes and whatā€™s required to reconstruct a strain field if youā€™re wondering, Marrett and Peacock would be SO disappointed)

When I was TAing a structural geology class in grad school, the senior & very southern professor explained in detail to the class how he had named Chunky Gal Mountain in western North Carolina after a ā€œvoluptuous young woman [he] once knew.ā€ One of them turned an impressive shade of beet red.

Quick crowdsource question: has anyone sent untrimmed, oriented samples to Wagner Petro for this sections? I have some that I NEED to get out the door for undergrad thesis work, but between work in our rock prep room and safety issues with ortho-ordered limited mobility in one arm, I canā€™t cut now.

Climbing up steep and narrow gullies turns out to be a lot more challenging with a block of fresh titanium in your shoulder and your arm in a slingā€¦ Regardless, itā€™s been a blast watching things click into place for this group while co-teaching with (and learning from) @sarahschanz.bsky.social!

Hereā€™s my recipe for uniaxial red onion stew*: It all started when I was an undergraduate geology student interested in deep sea mining and/or carbon capture, but grew up during the great Idaho potato famine, so we couldnā€™t replicate biaxial minerals from veggies, which may or may not be mineralsā€¦

Anyone out here in Blueskyland have a full copy (including drivers) of HeFTy that they can share or link to? Iā€™m trying to improve existing thermal models based on new Ar/Ar and zircon U-Pb dates, but canā€™t find it for the life of me and am stuck running models in v.1.75 on a 15 year old laptop. šŸ˜¬

ā€¦donā€™t will be.ā€ I donā€™t think we can sidestep the history of the field or the attraction to the macabre, which is also important, but we gotta do a better job of humanizing a very unhuman field that has increasing societal relevance during the ā€œgreenā€ energy push.

Iā€™d like to expand it to include water sampling and field data collection in the future. Iā€™m hoping it helps students get a wider view of industry applications/methods while providing options beyond traditional mapping projects.

Another data-void reply, but I rented equipment from PASSCAL. The past few days have been understanding methods and applications of seismic and GPR. I have a group whose final project is designing and executing a data collection campaign on GPR-negotiable (i.e., accessible) terrain.

Sure, gem quality stibnite is stunning, but letā€™s be honest, itā€™s mostly just toxic. Quartz on the other hand, in addition to abundant scientific utility and geologic significance (it defines strength of the upper-middle crust!), is beautiful even at its least prismatic.
