It fully tracks that the zenith of his career was working for his father in law.

How hard would it be just to cut the mic and correct things? Utterly ludicrous outdated format design that's been beaten by bullying and lying.

The presentation of him as some kind of centre right technocrat just seems bafflingly at odds with reality. It feels like a lot of people/commentators saw a British Asian man in a nice suit, who was in finance, and kind of built their view of him solely from that.

This is the manifesto commitment I can get behind. That and weapon degradation.

Supposed to be? What does that mean? If they don't win votes. And they don't have wide readership. And their direct mechanical influence is minor. What's the point of paying attention to them? They're clearly a legacy of pre-modern media. Fighting over them feels like arguing about the Corn Laws.

I'm sorry but that's absolute tosh. Barely anyone reads them. They generate a day or so of coverage, and then they're largely gestured at and that's about. They're only function, other than giving party members weird stuff to argue about, is overriding the Lords faster.

Far, far easier to drive the conversation when you're sitting on a fat majority. Committing to anything in a manifesto just exposes you to easy attacks while gaining you nothing.

A tiny tiny fraction of the electorate pays attention to manifestos, let alone reads them.

Does it? How much do manifestos actually matter if you've got a stonking majority?

Does it not just seem screamingly obvious to everyone that they absolutely cannot reopen this debate from opposition?

Agree that the people seeking the distinction are more often than not just bad faith actors seeking to excuse removing democratic rights; however as a citizen of the UK it is worth pointing out that's it's possible to be a democracy without being a republic.

I wonder what it's going to take to have a grown up conversation nationally about properly taxing asset wealth.
