Now Ari Parritz, who developed Kenton House (Dixie's) is seconding Cody's testimony and asking for tweaks, without which Kenton House would have been almost a full story smaller.

So the council has before it an amendment to EGAOD, which has passed the planning commission and is not horrible and will likely open the doors to a lot of great mixed use projects.

EGAOD currently limits new buildings on Grand to 3 stories or less. Other than 695 Grand (Dixies), which was a HUGE battle, nothing's been built on east Grand since EGAOD came into effect. streets.mn/2023/04/19/u...

I'm at the StP City Council meeting for a hearing on the East Grand Avenue Overlay District, which is restrictive zoning which has stifled development on Grand for almost 20 years.

I've always loved the notion that city streets are smooth enough to take a hand off your bars at intersections so that you can let drivers know your intentions if they happen to be paying attention.

Just got a chance to read this. I moved out of NE to Midway in 1998 and the infinitesimal amount of change since then is infuriating. Central used to be my commute into DT and it has barely changed. Keep on fighting the good fight is all I can say.

If you ever get a chance to ride Margaret Street on StP Eastside, you'll experience the BB's full potential. But most anything short of that is just window dressing. Also BBs suck in winter. I appreciate that StP's new bike plan leans heavily on protected trails.

A good listen & a solid episode. I've heard enough car brained crap from "avid cyclist" to know that the damage caused by Forester's ideas. Vehicular cycling should be seen as a necessary adaptation to a murderous transportation system, not as a prescription for how the world should be.

Apparently in 2011 I set up a personal Instagram account & forgot about it. Someone tried to hack it, got a security notice. Account secured, found this lovely picture of Riley & Ada at a mall somewhere. Possibly Galleria in Edina. Exactly like finding a faded old Polaroid behind your dresser.

In short, we need to invest in placemaking, not parking. Pedestrians, not vehicle throughput. We know these strategies work & will help small shops. We just need the leadership & courage to overcome kneejerk reactionaries.

We need leadership that can offer an alternative vision to small biz owners & can recreate our cities around transit & micro mobility. Who can focus on keeping sidewalks clear of snow and crosswalks painted at every intersection.

So I would argue that we need to offer a new urban vision that would help small business owners. We need to create safe, denser, walkable commercial districts that aren't dominated by cars. Narrower streets, car free plazas, places people will want to spend time.

Most city residents don't realize how much of their city's budget comes from sales taxes and commercial property taxes. Our local economies depend on healthy & vibrant downtowns & commercial corridors.

Although there's plenty of independently wealthy shopkeepers or people with well paid spouses who open shops as a hobby but in my experience these aren't the reactionaries who show up at city council meetings screaming about bike lanes.

I agree with this sentiment except us shopkeepers nowadays aren't particularly well off and we're driving 13 year old Hyundais, not BMWs. Retail's a much harder gig than it used to be.
