My mother used to work as a pediatric doctor and she was firm in her conviction that the difference between 30 kmph & 50 kmph (school zone vs city driving speeds in Canada) was the life and death difference when a child is struck by a car. 30 kmph you've got an injured child 50 and they're dead

I think the most apt comparison might end up being the Tet Offensive from the Vietnam war: an act (or acts) that technically failed and caused massive long term loss of life for the aggressor, but ultimately something that shook the resolve of the larger power and spelled the end of support.

To be clear, my point is not to pick out any faults or shortcomings in your reporting, it's just maddening in general. As you say, it must be all the more frustrating to be one of the developers (or even executives) that's just trying to make it all work.
