I'm really interested to see how the arguments go. I can totally see them coming out and asking how it's different for an AI to train on copyrighted material vs a human being inspired by it or making something super derivative but legally distinct. It's cynical but... kind of hard to refute?

Indeed. I wonder if it might not come down to dollah-dollah bills... an individual artist making a derivative work won't be making the bank ChatGPT would. Or maybe it's form. You can get an A.I. to make a custom song, but the result is fundamentally different from a mashup.
