That critique in Consequences of Party Reform flows directly from the less political science-y efforts of Commission for a Democratic Majority. And as a Berkeley PhD from the era told us, "Nelson was a warrior, at war with the New Left." Anyway, curious for your take on that and more in the book.

Well, you've increased my interest in reading it (which was already sufficient). He was definitely not a fan of the New Left, but Consequences is as anti-Carter and anti-Reagan as anything else. But I wasn't there until later (and the New Left was long gone by then).
