What are you currently excited about (other than the very awesome Krissy and Athena, or writing and music)?

It's hilarious to me that they're mad about Force witches. That was a thing literal decades ago! Keep up, dudes.

The quote seems ridiculous until you read further & realize this data center is incredibly loud (they're cooling the servers with fans), rattling windows blocks away & even preventing people from sleeping. The mine is emitting as much as 90 decibels on the nightly - that's basically a lawnmower.

The authors are all scientists from Columbia University, UC Berkeley, & Michigan State. I doubt they're especially misogynistic. There's no need to assume bad faith. In fact it would be good to know just how badly other things in our environments are contaminated so these things can be addressed.

Hey all. We can ridicule evil people without the lazy trope of criticizing their appearance. Too often that just veers into *sshole territory that hurts people other than the target of your ire. And it's mean-spirited.

You know, it's funny because they could actually nail Biden on something substantial like Palestine. But no, much better to keep focusing on the debate instead. πŸ™„

Apparently it makes for less stable foam, but next time I'm going to reduce the sugar. Right now it's almost as sweet as typical Thai iced coffee in the US, which is a lot. πŸ˜‚ Will try a hand mixer instead of my milk frother too - the milk frother made OK foam, but a mixer would do a better job.

There are metals just in the environment (both natural and from pesticides, etc.), so I wouldn't assume cotton balls are any safer.

It'd be great if this was regularly tested and regulated.

For those who have been asking about environmental contamination vs. additives, here's what the study says. TL;DR: It's likely background contamination but the metals may also be deliberately added.

If the NYTimes did their homework, they'd notice that the White House also recently announced an initiative on Parkinson's Disease research. This is fear, uncertainty, and doubt and is terrible misinformation from the NYTimes.

Hey all, what are your favorite GOTV orgs? I've been thinking about where to put some time/effort/dollars in the coming months. * Frankly I'm too frustrated with Dems to put energy directly there. But we also absolutely need to prevent Trump from becoming king.

That said, the study notes that regulation around metal levels would be a good thing. (You think??) * US folks: The recent Chevron ruling from SCOTUS gutted regulatory agencies' ability to do this though. If we want more protections we need agencies to have authority.

FWIW, a chemistry and a biology PhD in the replies say the amounts of lead found in the tampons are very small.

I love Dr. Gunter's work. But also the article from her you linked is from 2017 and the study linked is from 2024. It's new information. A scientist who posted in the replies says the metal levels are low enough she's not personally concerned, but the science is solid.

I use tampons. Not trying to scare anyone unnecessarily, just saw the news article from CBS and was concerned after reading the study they linked that is new as of this month.

Not just comics. Live events too. I used to spend $ on FB ads for Raks Geek + Raks Inferno shows because they worked. The ROI is terrible now & organic is dead. * Emails don't seem to move the needle much for live shows in the burlesque world, though I send them anyway- folks often don't see them.

"Our findings point towards the need for regulations requiring the testing of metals in tampons by manufacturers." Regulations would be great.

Indeed. The study spent some time talking about this: "In general, regulations in the US, EU, and UK protecting consumers from potential contaminants in tampons are nearly nonexistent, & none of these governments requires manufacturers to test their products for harmful chemicals, including metals."

As someone w/ the science background, do you find the levels of metals (lead & otherwise) in the study concerning? Genuine question. I'm not a scientist, but I did read the study as a layperson. It sounded not great given that part of the body absorbs so much & exposure over a lifetime seems bad?

Yes!! They did actual coalition-building & cooperation! I hope Americans get a clue. It's maddening watching how our leaders don't seem to know when to step aside. * Not just Biden. It's RGB & that entire era of liberals that don't seem to know how to train the next generation & hand off power.

There's a related trend where videos keep wanting me to wear white t-shirts under dresses and I'm like wait, I thought we did that already and decided that was a bad idea? * This is the case with a lot of younger fashion right now. I'm OK being old, LOL.

Science fiction has never really been about predicting the future. It's more about examining us in the present. The Future (TM) is a way to grapple with the now. Sometimes before it's too late.
