I've been lamenting this for awhile. I just abandoned Meta, because of the blitzkrieg AI scraping of art it unleashed last month. Facebook was very useful for selling books, so it's not a "so what?" A lot of comics folk were there. Twitter is finished. Insta is Meta. So now what?

Book industry marketeers advise to focus on TikTok. OK. And what happens when TikTok is banned in the US? Didn't we learn from Twitter? And do we really want to trust China, with their history of censorship of books? Not that a 2nd Trump Regime will be any better. Or Florida and Texas right now!

btw the book business in general is in a bad state right now. It's not just comics.
A jawdropping 70% of booksales in 2023 are backlist. 70%!
Me, too. The bulk of my royalties are from My Friend Dahmer, which was released 12 years ago.

I'm not terribly upset about bailing on Meta. The stench of that place was becoming intolerable. Why should a banned author like myself be on a social media platform that gave birth to Moms For Liberty, and allows them to organize and spread? And a thousand other groups. Fuck you Zuckerberg.

I mean realistically, being an old warhorse, I only have a few more books left in me. What, 3? 4 more? Not being morbid, that's just the way of things. If I was starting out with no rep or following? I'm at a loss how I would make a name and promo my work. Anyone?

It's tiring. These social media crash and burn so fast. Build up a useful following and then poof some billionaire fucks it up. Entshittification is the biz strategy of the 2020s. No one gets a choice, except crappy ones.

People keep saying that something else will come along, but will it? Bluesky is great, but compared to the engagement I got on FB and Twitter at their peak? Not even fucking close & I don't have much confidence it ever will be. I'll try Cara as an Insta substitute. Start from scratch. Again.
