All I want to do is promote my fucking work. Why is this suddenly harder than it's ever been?

I'm not terribly upset about bailing on Meta. The stench of that place was becoming intolerable. Why should a banned author like myself be on a social media platform that gave birth to Moms For Liberty, and allows them to organize and spread? And a thousand other groups. Fuck you Zuckerberg.

I mean realistically, being an old warhorse, I only have a few more books left in me. What, 3? 4 more? Not being morbid, that's just the way of things. If I was starting out with no rep or following? I'm at a loss how I would make a name and promo my work. Anyone?

Billionaires ruin social media. Billionaires ruin mainstream comics. Billionaire ruin digital publishing. Billionaires ruin book retail. Billionaires ruin the press. Billionaires ruin the book publishing biz.

It's tiring. These social media crash and burn so fast. Build up a useful following and then poof some billionaire fucks it up. Entshittification is the biz strategy of the 2020s. No one gets a choice, except crappy ones.

People keep saying that something else will come along, but will it? Bluesky is great, but compared to the engagement I got on FB and Twitter at their peak? Not even fucking close & I don't have much confidence it ever will be. I'll try Cara as an Insta substitute. Start from scratch. Again.

I've been lamenting this for awhile. I just abandoned Meta, because of the blitzkrieg AI scraping of art it unleashed last month. Facebook was very useful for selling books, so it's not a "so what?" A lot of comics folk were there. Twitter is finished. Insta is Meta. So now what?

Hey, remember how librarians and I were warning everyone that mass book-banning is just step one of a fascist government takeover? Well, some of the same book-banning orgs we warned you about are on the advisory board for Project 2025, whose leader calls it a "second American Revolution.”

This is the tradcath weirdo whom the @nytimes.com is publishing to tell you not to vote.

You should not listen to him. Instead, you should shove his ass into a locker and burn the entire campus containing said locker to the ground. (The campus is Hillsdale)

Thanks to the shame campaign, Jerry & Joe both got a pension of $20k a year. Still peanuts, compared to the $600M the Superman films made in box office alone, but it was a game-changer for both men and let them live with some dignity. DC-Warner never would have done it if not for the Supe film.

Imagine. The creator of one of the greatest pop-culture characters EVER... one that had already made billions in profit (adjusted for inflation) for DC, forced to work as a mail clerk just to feed his family and pay rent.

Marlon Brando got $3.7M and an 11% cut for being in the film. Siegel & Shuster would receive.... zilch! It was only a protest campaign by comics creators, led by Neal Adams and Jerry Robinson, 2 guys successful enough to risk the wrath of DC Comics, that shamed Warner-DC into making amends.

One of the great wrongs of comics history. Jerry Siegel at his mail clerk job in 1975. He made $7000 a year. Warner Bros., owner of DC Comics, was about to make the first Superman blockbuster film, the most expensive ever. It made $300M. Jerry hadn't gotten a cent off Supes since... 1948!

The Wally Wood like end makes me sad. Destitute and ravaged by addiction and unable to work. Jones is very peaceful about her situation. I don't think money mattered to her. Neil Gaiman speaks eloquently about this here. Still... hard to accept. She was SO prolific and in demand. Sigh.

It's not as good as the Spain Rodriguez film, currently on Tubi and has my HIGHEST recommendation, but it's worth a watch, if you're either a fan or unfamiliar with Jones.

JCJ didn't transition until 1998, so the final decade of her life. The doc does a nice job discussing it, and Jones is very open and reflective. It's ok to use whatever identity she herself used at a particular time.

Lots from Jones' Studio mates Kaluta and Wrightson. His ex Louise Simonson. Wonderful look back at a golden age of fantasy sci-fi illustration. Wow. Jones ended up living in a rented room, w/ no money. Alcoholism, depression took a heavy toil. But she says at peace. Her work meant a lot to me.

The doc could use more discussion of Jones' working methods imo. Could've used more interviews outside of comics, too, say w/ an editor from National Lampoon or the book publishers that bought all those Jones' covers. Both would have been interesting to hear from.

My favorite story from The Studio, via Barry Smith. When he self-published his Conan portfolio (which blew away the yawn John Buscema titles Marvel was churning out) a Marvel lawyer summoned BWS into the HQ and threatened legal action because: "Stan Lee created Conan." Groan.

Barry Smith in 1974 was firing up his own Gorblimey Press, and self-published posters, prints, portfolios, all through the fan press like RBCC and The Buyer's Guide. I bought a bunch. Gorgeous stuff. Everyone was trying to get out of mainstream comics in the 1970s! These guys all pulled it off.

Guess the Bruce Jones credit was a gag. 1974, Bernie finished his Swamp Thing run & was working on his Frankenstein masterpiece, DC covers & Warren splashes. Kaluta drew The Shadow, Carson of Venus, and covers for DC. Jones was doing paperback covers. BWS finished Red Nails for Marvel. Wow.

They all shared space at "The Studio," their loft art space in Chelsea in NYC. This was back when a loft could be had for peanuts. The 4th member was Barry Windsor Smith. Too bad he didn't contribute a panel. L-R: Bernie, Jones, Kaluta, Barry.

That's a SHITLOAD of talent on one short story! These 3 were already legends by 1974. Red Circle was a mystery-horror imprint of Archie Comics btw. They only had a couple titles in the 1970s.

The cool thing about this, is the kid who owned the book bought it from Jeff Jones at a con, and got the story on how it was made. Jeff signed all the panels he drew, then told him Bernie & Mike were at the con, too. Track them down and they'll sign THEIR panels. And they did!
