I've seen FAR too many AP US History essays that essentially say that the New Deal and Great Society programs were about imposing governmental controls on Americans.

They are related to the essays asserting that President Hoover constructed Hoovervilles as emergency housing for the homeless. Apparently he felt sorry for unemployed people and wanted to help them out.
