They’ve already made it legal to run over protestors and there is a group of well armed Americans whose number one dream in life is to commit murders society tells them they are good guys for. I feel like all it will take is a little more leeway for horrific things to happen.

A specific historical analog I could see happening is like what happened in Indonesia. There are interviews with people that filled mass graves with political dissidents for the government that still look back on it fondly and feel they were doing a patriotic duty.
