An important 1982 lecture by Grace Hopper is stored on tape in a vault at the NSA
MuckRock filed a FOIA request to get a copy of the lecture
Three years later, the NSA said they could not read the 1982 tape format, and sent back a photocopy of the tape reel 🙃

when you further consider the impact of freight truck electrification on the highway trust fund… maybe we should start replacing aggressively-graded highway mountain passes with highway tunnels, use the process to create more wildlife crossings, and pay for it all using tolls, or something

we have insanely aggressive grades on mountain passes by global standards, which is not only increasingly dangerous as more cars go electric, but a huge barrier to electrifying freight trucks – which we need to do even as we shift more freight to rail, for path dependency reasons.

I am pretty worried about that pedestrianization pilot’s future, tbh – they took half of a couplet, but didn’t convert the other half for two-way traffic, making the nearest two-way street more chaotic than usual. Any analogous cases in France you can think of?

I only ever asked this question in the first place because I use the term “monster” to describe my very human, very abusive biological father. Seeing both Erin and Aaron’s posts reminded me that this terminology could be Bad And Wrong, which made me want to be sure I was understanding them.

Even if we don’t build the overhead electrification system immediately, why not design and environmentally clear it while this expensive planning process is underway? Then you can just build it whenever it makes sense, not spend a bunch of additional money on planning overhead.
