What I love about Labour's 'wow, you've had some right cowboys in here' routine is that despite being incredibly transparent, for some reason, a lot of Conservative MPs are merrily going 'Well, actually, it's been *OBVIOUS* that we fucked it on prisons for some time!!'

But yeah "Serious Danger" has some welly, I should have said *released* before 1990 ;) (IIRC the NME review accused it of being a fake as otherwise it would imply Julian Cope invented acid house)

I absolutely love Fried, it's my favourite Cope LP, and yet the freak out on Reynard The Fox sounds like two biscuits having an argument in a tin

I am generally an Eighties Production Defender but some of those early solo Cope tunes are great songs really held back by dodgy sonics IMO, I don't think he recorded anything with a detectable bottom end until 1990

Was a huge fan back in the day, he's held back by the "absolutely throwing these 10 points in the bin here" factor of not voting for "Reward" or "World Shut Your Mouth" (the latter I really don't like much)

Listening to Lloyd Cole And His Commotions' RATTLESNAKES, I used to have a 'rock yearbook' with reviews of this and they were all ew, it's a young man mistaking being well-read for life experience, and now I can think yeah, that's exactly what's so charming about it

Yeah as others have said it does also seem like there's been a cultural shift within the England team (away from "being wankers") which helps detoxify the discourse around it

OK it has just struck me that "I feel like people are more normal about England than they used to be" and "I no longer work in an office full of middle-class men performing geezerdom" may be a tiny bit related

Yeah this is the impression I've got, that there was this long era of rage that England weren't doing better, then general acceptance that they didn't deserve to, and now surprise and delight but mixed with a sort of weird fury that they're doing well without deserving to..?

I'm not remembering it wrong to think that the media/public discourse around the England men's football team was particularly deranged in the Sven era, right? (the whole 96-2010-ish period I guess but especially then)

The office Tory at my old job was a big fan of his when he was still fairly obscure and did at one point say "you'd like him Tom he's a big nerd" so tbf I should have seen this coming

It's weird in that (while not a WH40K guy in this case) I am hardened against arsehole public figures liking the cool things I like but am always faintly surprised when they like the uncool things, even though the recent history of uncool things is full of bastards liking them

I - a man with almost no interest in football - was clearing out some old boxes last year and found the 2003 Football Manager case, it felt strangely heavy and I opened it to find a dozen A4 pages of closely handwritten notes on prospects from the Finnish lower leagues
