in a jury pool that included a cop, a 2a fanatic, and a former prison guard, i stood up and said "i am a prison abolitionist. i have a moral objection to sentencing someone into a system that is detrimental to society."

the minimum sentence for the charge was 25 years in prison with no parole. many in the room said that 25 years was not enough time in prison and they wouldn't be able to consider it, if a guilty charge was determined. others expressed that they thought the charge should result in the death penalty.

i got called for jury duty and was immediately assigned as a potential juror for a felony case involving sexual abuse of a child. what followed was a humiliating and deeply disturbing voir dire process in which 70 strangers were put in a room and asked to disclose our own histories of abuse
