What I love about this story is that... no one is really the hero, nor is anyone truly a villain. Here I chose to draw Maadi as the card 'Selfish', because he is! He knew that killing the snake would damn his whole empire, but he did it anyway for his own personal interests. But-

Summary of the story: There is a 7 headed snake that, in return for a sacrifice of one maiden and one horse a year, makes sure the empire of Wagadou enjoys ample rain and gold. But when Siya is to be sacrificed, her lover Maadi kills the snake and thus destroys the empire

I'm currently obsessed with "The Magic Orange Tree: And Other Haitian Folktales" Collected by Diane Wolkstein. Each story has a forward about how she collected the story and the greater context of it. Phenomenal stuff! Wish I could have fit one into my oracle deck... alas... next project
