Yesterday’s booth at #Lumbee Homecoming was fun. Spoke with 100+ Lums & visitors about our cultural connections to water & threats from pollution, unsustainable development, & #ClimateChange.
Shared about my book, heard new stories, & gave out a gallon of fresh blueberries!

#FossilFuel projects cause more than environmental harm - they erode sense of identity & place for people nearby. Thanks, @drmacaretta.bsky.social, for leading this #OpenAccess Perspective.

A day of wonder on the swamp with good friends! We took in the spring canopy that towered overhead, and we glided across honey-colored sandbars on swirling dark water. I'm home. #Coharie #Lumbee #dendrochronology #hydrology #kayak #canoe #easternNC #OnTheSwamp

Barely 1% of the 96,000 sites on the National Register of Historic Places are listed specifically because of their significance to Indigenous peoples. The story of one such site, Old Main, frames my new book's discussion of Indigenous cultural preservation & environmental stewardship.

I’ll be at Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill on Thursday, May 2 to discuss my new book with Louie Rivers.
Dr. Rivers & I worked together for years at NCSU, and his work on #EnvironmentalJustice affected my thinking about policies, practices, & lived experiences.

Last week was a whirlwind, but the highlight was a book launch hosted by Duke's Forum for Scholars and Publics. I got to sit on stage and talk with my good friend & colleague Diego (@carbonshed.bsky.social), and I chatted afterward with folks who are reading, have read, or want to read ON THE SWAMP!

At last year’s AISES conference, Apple Maps announced addition of US #Indigenous lands to their database. The presenters only mentioned reservations, but they later told me they’d used the US Census AIANNHA layer, which includes NC tribal lands. Not perfect, but good to see SDTSAs tagged.

A new critical review, led by Lumbee ⚡️undergraduate⚡️ Unmai Arokiasamy, is the coverage you really need.

I’m re-upping this thread from last month, noting that today NCAI voted down the proposed constitutional amendment to expel non-federally recognized tribes. The pre-vote rhetoric mirrored the discriminatory behavior that Indigenous scholar Vine Deloria warned against some 50 years ago.
