Time to submit abstracts to the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting. We plan to hold the 8th "Indigenous Science to Action" session this year, so I guess it's now safe to call it an annual tradition! 🙌 Deadline is July 31.

Yesterday’s booth at #Lumbee Homecoming was fun. Spoke with 100+ Lums & visitors about our cultural connections to water & threats from pollution, unsustainable development, & #ClimateChange.

Shared about my book, heard new stories, & gave out a gallon of fresh blueberries!

Barely 1% of the 96,000 sites on the National Register of Historic Places are listed specifically because of their significance to Indigenous peoples. The story of one such site, Old Main, frames my new book's discussion of Indigenous cultural preservation & environmental stewardship.

Last week was a whirlwind, but the highlight was a book launch hosted by Duke's Forum for Scholars and Publics. I got to sit on stage and talk with my good friend & colleague Diego (@carbonshed.bsky.social), and I chatted afterward with folks who are reading, have read, or want to read ON THE SWAMP!

Appreciated the opportunity to share about Indigenous peoples & our cultural connections to water - topics that feature prominently in my new book, On the Swamp! Check out the link to listen to an interview & reading from the book (transcripts, too).

ON THE SWAMP is here, and I am thrilled! The publisher sent me a copy last week, and folks have begun receiving preordered copies. The book explores environmental justice through stories and experiences of #Lumbee & other Indigenous peoples in eastern North Carolina.

At last year’s AISES conference, Apple Maps announced addition of US #Indigenous lands to their database. The presenters only mentioned reservations, but they later told me they’d used the US Census AIANNHA layer, which includes NC tribal lands. Not perfect, but good to see SDTSAs tagged.

For the first (and perhaps only) time, I was part of 2 paper submissions in one day. Hopefully that does not mean I will get 2 rejections in 1 day a few weeks from now. 😵‍💫

'You Don't Look Native to Me,' a photo book about Lumbee people, saw recent coverage by CNN & Guardian that felt both shallow & settler gaze-y.

A new critical review, led by Lumbee ⚡️undergraduate⚡️ Unmai Arokiasamy, is the coverage you really need.

Today marks 66 years since the Battle of Hayes Pond - a key moment in Lumbee history and in the intersecting stories of Civil and Indigenous Rights. Read my unrolled thread from the 60th anniversary commemoration (2018) to learn more about it.

My new essay, "Sovereignty's Cycle," tells about Deloria's advocacy for my Tribal Nation, the Lumbee, as part of a larger discussion of feedbacks between sovereignty, recognition, and stewardship of land & water in a time of environmental crises. 2/3

My dear friend Malinda Lowery has been doing amazing work
to write, produce, and direct a film based on stories from Lumbee Indian people. Today is her birthday - would you take a moment to share, watch the trailer, and consider supporting her work?

I’m re-upping this thread from last month, noting that today NCAI voted down the proposed constitutional amendment to expel non-federally recognized tribes. The pre-vote rhetoric mirrored the discriminatory behavior that Indigenous scholar Vine Deloria warned against some 50 years ago.

“If this proposal succeeds, NCAI will have assumed the mantle of colonizer, without the colonizer even asking for the favor.”

Deron Marquez (San Manuel Band) on an upcoming vote to change the NCAI constitution:

The interesting construct behind this proposal is the willingness to use a colonizer’s “Indian description,” further empowering the federal government.
