Brussels, Berlin and Frankfurt watching v closely after surprising results of the 2nd round of voting in 🇫🇷

Reaction generally relieved, but message clear: 🇫🇷 far from safe & far from business as usual on EU level

Some excellent choices, old and new, who are largely unknown in English. The Uwe Timm work I'd have gone with is 'Morenga': a fascinating early attempt (1978) at a novel dealing with Germany's colonial past. Also huge fan of Tawada and Stanišič (esp 'Herkunft') as 'international' German writers

How do the Swiss fans decide which language to chant in? Do they just start it one language and then everyone who speaks that one joins in?

After catching up on sleep, I've had time to see what the Germans are saying about Labour's return to power.

There seems to be real goodwill to the new govt; Labour must seize it. Work can start on a security deal, but it will ofc cost valuable political capital.

Today's Dispatch covers Bundestag reaction to the 1st round of the French election.

Real fury over Macron’s decision, as many see it across the political spectrum (apart from the AfD presumably), to unnecessarily gamble on the future of Europe.

In today's Deutschland Dispatch:

My review of the German press' reaction to the first round of voting in the French parliamentary elections. I think it can safely be described as 'horrified'-- partly because it shows the Germans a premonition of their own future.

This idea is actually a very live policy debate within Labour’s sister party in Germany, the SPD. They’re talking about doing a deal w Uzbekistan (to avoid directly working w Taliban) to deport migrants convicted of serious crimes.

In today's 'Dispatch':
I review an interesting divergence in views on the 'debt brake' between the FAZ and Handelsblatt, two of Germany's biggest liberal papers, and discuss how the SPD and Greens could benefit from it:

What do you make of Scholz's comments to ARD y/day about his concerns re an RN victory? Do you think he might refuse to cooperate with anyone in an RN-dominated 🇫🇷 govt other than Macron, almost like a copy of the 'firewall' on cooperation with the AfD?

The AfD has been labelled for months as a pro-Russian '5th column'. That has seemed a tad far-fetched, but a new report covered in today's Dispatch shows there's real cause for concern

You might be right about it being a first ever. RM are definitely known for making tanks, etc. What’s fascinating is Dortmund’s reason for taking the deal (besides the millions of €’s): “starting a debate about the country’s security”

What does 🇩🇪 make of 🇬🇧 and #Brexit ?
Well, if you ask the new leader of Merkel's old party, he'll tell you the Germans are to blame.

He's taking notes on the #RwandaPlan, too.

Read all about that - and reports of 🇨🇳 spies at a Cologne brothel - in today's Deutschland Dispatches.
