My latest post summarizes March 2024, the planet’s 10th consecutive warmest month on record. Remarkable that 5 nations/territories set an all-time heat record for any month, and an additional 24 set an all-time March heat record.

The CSU Atlantic hurricane season forecast is super-aggressive: 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes, 5 majors. If this verifies, the number of named storms would rank 3rd-highest on record; hurricanes, 5th-highest; major hurricanes, 9th; ACE index, 9th.

The U.S. saw its two worst tornado outbreaks in April 1974 (50 yrs ago today) and April 2011. How might things look different next time? Some thoughts from @drshepherd2013.bsky.social + Victor Gensini & a few reflections from @DrJeffMasters and me:

A note re today's EPA auto rule: the de facto target for 2032 is 56% electric vehicles (EVs) and 13% plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), which use both gas and electricity. Some media refer to PHEVs simply as "hybrids", but there are also "regular" hybrids that use only gas & don't plug in. #confusing

Today’s spring equinox is the earliest in 128 years! Not sure why this factoid has gotten virtually no U.S. media notice, but here’s an explainer from Canada’s Weather Network:

Same song, ninth verse: Every month since June—including this past Feb—has been the warmest iteration of that month globally in at least 175 years.

Not good, folks: We just had the warmest U.S. winter on record. As @bhensonweather.bsky.social writes, "Snow cover was scarce, the Great Lakes were mostly ice-free, and a million-acre wildfire tore across Texas."

Ok *now* it's starting to really look like an early spring - we are seeing plant response to the really warm winter and early spring, esp in the middle of the country. This is the 6-day forecast for the "start of spring," with some locations 4wks early now #phenology www.usanpn.org/data/maps/spring

In the history of “key messages” issued by NWS offices, this smorgasbord is as key as it gets. Good Lord!
