Is it really true that Twitter political advertising is tiny and doesn't move things? Is that distinct from political fundraising? Because I can't imagine Ilhan (and other progs) would be paying Musk to run fundraising ads, given the reputational costs, if they weren't pretty effective!

Israel's wartime government just broke up. Does it matter? I wrote about why even though Netanyahu's centrist rival Benny Gantz is leading in the polls after leaving the government, the math still favors continued Netanyahu rule, and what that might mean for Israelis and Palestinians:

Social media excels at making people feel informed when they are not actually being informed, but rather just affirmed or inflamed. As it turns out, that's what many people actually want out of their "news" consumption, which has made things extremely difficult for the traditional news industry.

I recommend reading articles before responding to them. Neither Israel nor AIPAC has anything to do with this, and conspiracy theories that blame them for it prevent those who want to combat the anti-TikTok legislation from doing anything about the actual causes.

The European Union has now also imposed sanctions on the same Israeli extremists just sanctioned by the US. The Biden administration is now essentially leading an international sanctions campaign against the Israeli far-right. They start, others follow. www.jpost.com/breaking-new...

Yes, this is at best a mistranslation, though given all the effort involved and the account, probably mendacious. What Bibi actually says in the video is that the cabinet will approve a $19 billion shekel plan to reconstrut the Gaza BORDER communities destroyed by Hamas.

Polls show that Israelis overwhelmingly want early elections and they overwhelmingly want Netanyahu to resign (either now or after the war). He's going to resist both and try to avoid facing the voters as long as possible. Which means popular protest will only grow.

Not soon enough, but the fact that a consensus centrist politician like Gantz is saying this indicates how the pressure for new elections is ramping up in Israel. It's only going to get more intense.

Happy to explain. I didn't tag her in my tweet because I have no desire to engage with a fundamentally bad faith actor who thrives on attention and fighting with media figures. By tagging me and the tweet in reply to her, you made that much more likely! By blocking, I made my quoted tweet invisible.

Like many bigots, Trump divides Jews up into "good Jews" (those who agree with him and support his ideology) and "bad Jews" (those who don't). He's been doing this for a while, and he's far from alone across the political spectrum, as I wrote back in September: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

I wrote about the one thing most likely to force new elections in Israel and threaten Netanyahu's reign. It's not anything Biden or Schumer might say or do, but something far more fundamental to Israeli politics at this moment: Conscripting the ultra-Orthodox into Israel's army.

Openly agreeing to allow any Palestinians to govern post-war Gaza is anathema to Netanyahu, because doing so would upset the far-right flank of his coalition, whose post-war plan for Gaza is "ethnically cleanse and resettle it." Gallant is holding the line against that.

Israeli defense minister Gallant again says something that Netanyahu and his hard-right allies don't want to hear, this time that the least bad option for post-war Gaza governance is Palestinians linked to the Palestinian Authority (which is also Biden's position):

he Netanyahu government agreed to a March 31 deadline to reform the Haredi draft laws. That reform was expected to be a farce that fudged the issue, in order to keep the coalition together. But after Oct. 7, that doesn't seem viable. And so the clock ticks. Read: www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

The ultra-Orthodox parties provide 18 of Netanyahu's 64 coalition seats. They oppose conscription. But others in Netanyahu's government demand it. This could break the coalition and force new elections. www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

Since its founding, Israel has had mandatory Jewish conscription into its army, with one notable exception: ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students do not serve. This started as 400 men. It's now 66,000. After October 7, Israeli society is no longer willing to let this slide--a huge problem for Netanyahu.

Their sole claim to fame is being slightly less wrong about the last general election if you don't look closely at the details to realize they in fact overestimated Likud and got most of the other parties wrong too. They just ended up with a Netanyahu coalition result thanks to their Likud boost.

Antisemitism is an inverted worldview, in which the 0.2% of the world that is Jewish controls the 99.8% that is not. In reality, the non-Jewish majority determines the fate of the tiny Jewish minority. Jews are not taking your TikTok, but conspiracies of Jewish control have taken many Jewish lives.

Yeah, Liebowitz had a very different theology/political approach than say, the Satmar. He was a Zionist and didn't even believe in the messianic era as traditionally understood! But his greater secular/rational engagement was precisely what made him a more trenchant critic of the occupation.
