If you know me, and know I love baking, you might be wondering why I didn’t bake something myself. Don’t worry: I have *plans *—epic plans for Earth inspired cakes—but it’s going to take a little while to learn the requisite techniques. More to come!

Sisyrinchium has become one of my favorite garden plants. Though often called blue or yellow-eyed grass, it’s actually a member of the Iris family. Many species native to N America. Clumping; spreads politely. Easy to share. Looks esp good near water + w/ other Irises

Half the examples in the story are underwater, but there are ancient ecosystems on land, too. Trees definitely overlapped with dinosaurs. Forests have existed for at least 380 million years. But the dominant types of trees on the planet have changed a lot over time

For Nautilus Magazine, I wrote about a question that has obsessed me: What are the oldest surviving ecosystems on Earth?
Turns out some extant meadows, reefs, and rainforests have persisted for hundreds of thousands to *tens of millions* of years.
What can they teach us?

Many gardeners consider color blocking, monochromatic groupings, or otherwise limited palettes to be guiding principles. Maybe one day I'll agree, but at this stage of my gardening journey, I find that aesthetic a bit dull. I want *all* the colors, close together. Give me the full rainbow, baby! ⭐🌈

My understanding it that it has to do with marketing. Each country considers their readers to be a unique market w/ distinct preferences, even if there is overlap in language. And some US/UK publishers choose to Anglicize or Americanize spelling, units of measurement etc to best suit their readers

The tapestry includes a selection of creeping thymes used more commonly as ground covers than for culinary purposes: red creeping thyme (which is particularly robust), wooly thyme (with fuzzy, silvery leaves), and Elfin thyme (which forms an especially dense/compact mat)

A tapestry of thyme: just one of the many ways we have replaced all the turfgrass on our property. Thyme is adapted to a Mediterranean climate (to which we’re heading), crowds out grass/weeds, produces scores of tiny flowers that bees love, and is delightfully fragrant.
